Cookbooks
In the 1990s, Finance Canada collaborated with the Treasury Board of Canada to produce a cookbook to fundraise for United Way. Employees from both departments were asked to contribute recipes and all proceeds from the sale of the cookbook went directly to United Way. The government of Canada has a longstanding commitment to supporting United Way and related charitable causes, as demonstrated by the annual Government of Canada Workplace Charitable Campaign (GCWCC), of which Finance Canada is an avid participant.
The cookbook presented in this exhibition was donated by Kevin Shoom and includes several contributions by Finance employees, a selection of which are presented below. Kevin Shoom's "Ma Goorman's Eggless Chocolate Chip Cookies" appear alongside submissions for "Bread and Butter Pickles" and "Zucchini Marmalade."
The cookbook is not short on variety and even includes a recipe for dog biscuits appropriately contributed by "Fido." Other recipes of interest include "Flying Saucers," a concoction of instant pudding, Dream Whip, and chocolate wafer cookies; "Cracker Pop Pie," a mix of soda crackers, egg whites, and crushed nuts; and a "Cream Cheese Pine Cone," a mélange of cream cheese, mayonnaise, bacon, green onions, and ground almonds molded into a cone.
